Classes

All our classes are completely hands-on for the entire duration of the class, theory is taught while working at the anvil, be prepared to be active on your feet for the entire class.

We adapt to each student’s needs. Class material and speed of progression is customized to each student during the class. Each class is designed to build off of the previous class from the intro class to professional level. We have the full trade apprenticeship plus a 40 year career to teach.

    Introduction to Blacksmithing

During this hands-on class you will be initiated into the fascinating world of blacksmithing and will be guided through forging a number of simple projects to take home such as a ring handled fire poker, a ring handled fire hook, square nails, a bottle opener, hooks, scrolls, leaves, and more.

This 8hr class is designed to help you establish a strong foundation in forge safety, setting up an anvil for your working height, stance at the anvil, hammering form, hammer control, fire handling, heat colour identification, tool and anvil identification, forge layout, and forging protocol. During this class we focus on drawing out, tapering, changing material cross section from round to square, flattening, straightening, and bending. Progression through class material is based on personal skill and learning speed.

    $525 per 8hr class, $312.50 per 4hr half class.

Successful class applicants will receive a roster of available class dates, classes are typically held on Saturdays.

    Basic Blacksmithing

Basic Blacksmithing is a series of classes in which you will be taught the fundamentals of the basic blacksmithing techniques; basic layout, drawing out, tapering, setting down, isolating material, changing cross section, flattening, fullering, spreading, straightening, upsetting, punching, slotting, drifting, cutting, chiseling, splitting, bending, scrolling, folding, shaping, and working as a striker. Students are encouraged to bring their own project ideas to work on. The basic course will allow you to determine your options in blacksmithing as a hobby, trades skill upgrade, or professional trades career.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of the introductory class or similar experience is required.

    Intermediate Blacksmithing

Intermediate Blacksmithing is a series of classes that will allow you to reinforce the skills you acquired in the basic course. In addition to more in depth instruction on the processes taught in the basic course, you will be taught; riveting, collaring, swaging, twisting, working with a striker, jig making, basic power hammer use, and production forging. Students are strongly encouraged to bring their own project ideas to work on. Students can also pay for classes or offset class costs by participating in production runs of goods sold in the forge store and other forge work. By the end of these courses you will have a good understanding of what will be required to start your own forge.

Prerequisites: Success completion of the basic blacksmithing course or equivalent experience is required.

It will allow you to apply and refine your new skills to a wide range of advanced blacksmithing projects. In addition to more in depth instruction on the processes taught in Basic and Intermediate blacksmithing, you will be taught; advanced layout, steel and iron alloy identification, working with carbon steel, spring steel, and tool steels, annealing, hardening, tempering, forge welding, tool making, advanced power hammer operation and maintenance, team striking, and design. Students will build projects entirely of their own design

Prerequisites: Successful completion of Intermediate Blacksmithing or equivalent experience is required.

    Professional Blacksmithing

These are a series of workshops for professional blacksmiths who are seeking to upgrade their skills or learn new techniques to apply in their forge. Special workshops with certified German Master Blacksmiths will also be offered.

Pricing and availability to be announced per workshop.

Build your own solid fuel forge workshop

This is a 2 day workshop to teach you about basic metal fabrication and welding, how to use castable refractory, forge theory, and firepot design. You will prepare and fabricate a metal firepot shell, mix and cast a refractory liner, and then cure the firepot for use. At the end of this workshop, you will be able to take home your own working firepot. On the first day of the class, after the refractory is cast, the rest of the class will be spent forging. On the second day of the class, the firepot is installed into our forge table and then cured using the heat from the coke fire. During the curing process, students will be forging at the anvil using their firepot.

This 2 day workshop costs $1650 per student and includes two 8hr days of instruction and forging plus the materials for the firepot.

Successful class applicants will receive a roster of available class dates, classes are typically held on Saturdays.

    Power Hammer Operation

This class is designed for students that would like training on how to set up, use, and maintain these useful but highly technical and dangerous machines. During the class we go over foundation design and building, how to install and set up your power hammer, safety, die design, installation, and maintenance, power hammer maintenance, stance at the power hammer, and different power hammer techniques. It is highly suggested that you have forging experience equivalent to our basic blacksmithing course before using a power hammer. A thorough understanding of how metal moves under the hammer is necessary before you will be able to safely operate a power hammer with proper form.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of Basic Blacksmithing or equivalent experience is required.
